Mr. Hilbert Reich age 93, a resident of Thunder Bay passed away on Friday, June 1st, 2018 at TBRHSC. Hil was born in Odessa Saskatchewan July 7th, 1924 but grew up in Leader Saskatchewan. His long standing habit of reading the daily newspaper started when he was a paperboy. As a teenager he was a valued employee of Eskin/Naimark, a small department store in Leader. Coming of age in wartime meant he would join his friends in the Regina Rifles and he deployed to Europe. He took part in the liberation of Holland and was a decorated veteran. He came home to Dauphin Manitoba as his family had moved there during the war. It was there that he met his future wife Phoebe Veal and they were married March 8th, 1947, a marriage that was to last some 63 years. Later that year they moved to Port Arthur to start their new life together. With a suggestion made by his father in law, Hil approached the office at CN Rail and was hired as a carman. He also became a crane operator and later made his self-taught hobby of carpentry his job. He worked for the railway until his retirement in 1986. Throughout his entire life he was always generous with his expertise, tools and time.
Hilbert will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his son Douglas (Valerie), daughter Judy, grandchildren Hailey and Courtney, Brother Bob (Sandra). He was predeceased by his wife Phoebe, and his sister Edna (Ab).
